The beach has always been my idea of a perfect escape. Watching the waves crash, staring at the ocean horizon, with sand between my toes… is what I picture whenever I feel the need to escape. For the past months, I’ve been feeling quite burnt out from work and in need of a getaway to relax and calm my soul and mind. Sometimes when you keep pushing and working nonstop like me, you forget to pause, reflect, and reward and take care of yourself.
Travel has always been my cure when I want to take a break. Since I didn’t want to stress over planning a trip, I decided to just go somewhere nearby which had a beach – La Union! It’s been almost a year since my last visit and I’ve been itching to go back! Last month, I finally cleared up my schedule and planned a roadtrip to La Union with my boyfriend, Martin.
Ever since “Elyu” or LU became a popular local tourist destination, so many new resorts, hotels, and hostels have sprouted. Personally, I never consider hostels anywhere for accommodation because I prefer a more private room and have trust issues with staying with complete strangers (although, I understand how others might like it because you get to meet people and make new friends!).
I decided to book at Thunderbird Resorts and Casinos Poro Point, which is located at San Fernando. San Juan is the more commercialized area of La Union where you could find the surfing spots, restaurants, and instagrammable cafes. Being just a 20-minute drive away from San Juan, Thunderbird’s location is perfect spot if you want to enjoy both the calm and busy side of La Union.
Upon entering the resort, you’ll find yourself in a totally different country. The whole place is Greek-inspired and reminds me of Santorini with its royal blue and white architecture.
We booked a Premier Deluxe room, which was so spacious. It came with two double beds, a big bathroom, and a balcony overlooking the beach.
We also enjoyed Free Wi-Fi Internet access, HD LED TV, tea/coffee machine and refrigerator. Our room was good for 4 people and cost Php 7,600 a night (*prices are subject to change depending on peak season).
I was definitely sold by the bed alone. It’s so fluffy!! What beach? Lol. This beach trip easily doubled as a staycation.
The room also came with a free breakfast package. The resort has several restaurants which offer different cuisines. Surely you will be able to satisfy your craving at any of them!
We enjoyed the breakfast breakfast at Olives Restaurant.
The resort is in itself its own destination. Aside from having its own beachfront, it also has an amazing amenity deck. Take a look this!
Apart from the amenities, they also have a world-class casino, an events place, function rooms and 9-hole all weather golf course.
Apart from it being greek inspired, they also have a piece of Los Angeles that you won’t miss when you enter. It reminds me of LACMA urban lights which I visited last December. Although this time, I didn’t have any hassle in trying not to get people in the way of my shot! 😛 P.S. This place is perfect for wedding prenups! 😉
I had such a relaxing and peaceful stay at Thunderbird Resorts. The service was great – everyone was so friendly and accommodating and everything was comfortable and clean. I highly recommend this place if you’re on a beach trip with family or a group of friends. Also if you’re looking for a different scene from the crowded San Juan area, I also suggest you consider this resort. It’s worth the 4-5 hr drive away from Manila!
